Are Strict Data Conventions Helpful or Overkill?

Sep 09, 2026

Earlier this week I had a great conversation with a client about the pros and cons of being overly clear (and disciplined) with their data conventions.

This includes things like: object naming, query design, workflow process, etc.

At the heart of it, the discussion was rooted in questions like:
- How strict do we *really* need to be with these rules?
- At what point does it become overkill?
- What's the realistic downside of not following them?

My guess is you may also have similar questions from time to time.

So that’s what I want to talk about in today’s video.

I’ll share with you the same feedback I gave my client.

By the end, you’ll have a better idea of the pros/cons of implementing rules with your data process.

And be able to apply them (or not) on your own team.

Enjoy!
