Avoiding Vendor Lock-in With Your Data Stack

Jun 24, 2026

By far one of the most common concerns I hear from data team leaders is this:

"I don't want to make a decision (or mistake) today that I'll regret 6 months from now."

And the most common decision has to do with tool selection, and the fear of vendor lock-in.

It's also something I think about often on my end as well.

I recently re-read "The Fundamentals of Data Engineering" and it had a great example for how to approach these types of decisions.

It talks about how Jeff Bezos would evaluate decisions while at Amazon.

How he would always try to categorize them as "one-way and two-way doors".

Or put another way, "reversible vs irreversible" decisions.

So in today's video, we're going to talk about that concept a little more.

We'll go through:

  • How this applies to Data Teams
  • Examples of this in practice
  • Why strategy is still the best remedy to avoid it

Enjoy!
